The Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) has downgraded its traffic forecast for European airports, predicting that full recovery to 2019 passenger volumes will be reached in 2025.
The forecast comes after the organisation published results for the first quarter of 2021, which showed that traffic across European airports represented by the organisation had declined by 81.7 per cent compared to the same three-month period in 2019.
It’s recovery forecast for Europe was previously set at 2024, however, sustained disruptions to travel, with lockdowns having been imposed across much of the continent in 2021 so far has resulted in the extended prediction.
Malta International Airport
Passenger traffic through Malta International Airport (MIA) totalled 39,392 movements during the month of April, the company said in a Malta Stock Exchange announcement.
Representing a drop of 94 per cent compared to the same month in 2019, this traffic result marked no significant improvement over previous months.
MIA’s top markets for the month were Italy, Germany, Turkey, France, and Bulgaria, with the United Kingdom remaining in the bottom half of the top 10 market table as a travel ban between the two countries remained in place.
The UK is expected to announce its Green Travel List this week, with Malta widely expected to be one of the few European destinations included, due to its high vaccination roll-out.
