The world’s largest company by market capitalisation, Apple, has unveiled a mixed-reality headset – Vision Pro, the company’s biggest product announcement in years.

The product was announced on Monday (yesterday) during the company’s annual developer’s conference. Getting your hands on the product is expected to set you back at least $3,499 (€3,274.89). It is slated to be available to consumers in 2024.

“Vision Pro is a new kind of computer that augments reality by seamlessly blending the real world with the digital world,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The company is describing the product as its first spatial computer.

With a whole new operating system integrated into the device, visionOS will immerse users in a three-dimensional interface which, unlike virtual reality googles, does not try to immerse you in a different virtual world.

Instead of using a desktop computer or a tablet, users will be able to do many of the same activities through the headset. The interface will overlay over their current surroundings, allowing them to be fully present and aware of what is happening around them.

At launch, the device will feature several apps from Adobe, Microsoft (Office) and other major developers. According to TechCrunch it will also include medical software for looking at renders of anatomy and an engineering app for visualising physics phenomena, like airflow, on top of real-world objects.
