The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) conducted more than 5,000 inspections between July and August. Subsequently it took action on 52 cases, that were found to be non-compliant with regulations.

MCCAA carries out regular inspections throughout Malta and Gozo to ensure compliance with consumer-related regulations falling under its jurisdiction. These inspections encompass various aspects, including price indications and product safety.

During this period, the Authority also conducted more than 3,000 inspections across various establishments regarding prices, with 250 of these inspections specifically focused on Gozo. In total, 19 establishments were discovered to be in violation of established regulations.

As a result, the MCCAA issued warnings to these establishments with 15 of them having already rectified their compliance, while the remaining four will be inspected once again in the coming days.

“These inspections are being carried out in order to ensure that consumers are informed about product pricing, with the aim of encouraging consumers to make more informed shopping decisions.”

In addition, the MCCAA inspected more than 2,000 products to ensure their safety. These inspections were carried out on various products such as toys, lifts, pesticides, chemicals, detergent, cosmetics and appliances among others. Eventually, 33 products were deemed unfit and were subsequently removed from the market.

The MCCAA reminded commercial operators of their commitment to ensure that products on the market are adequate and in conformity with the safety regulations in Europe. It also stressed the importance of clear pricing indications on all products on the market.

Complaints or reports on infringement of regulations can be reported through an online form on MCCAA or through the freephone by calling 80074400.
