glenn micallef

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) has extended its congratulations to Glenn Micallef for being assigned the youth portfolio by the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen.

Mr Micallef’s appointment, like all others in President Ursula von der Leyen’s new college of commissioners, still needs to be confirmed by the European Parliament.

The MHRA said this role is crucial for advancing initiatives that enhance youth engagement, cultural expression, and sports development across the European Union.

The association acknowledged the significant impact of this portfolio on tourism throughout the EU. According to the MHRA, in Malta, where tourism is a cornerstone of the economy, the promotion of cultural heritage, youth involvement, and sports activities is particularly important. The MHRA emphasised that Malta’s rich cultural assets and vibrant sports scene are key factors in attracting visitors and fostering economic growth.

The MHRA noted that while Mr Micallef’s responsibilities extend across all EU member states, his focus on these areas will also benefit Malta by reinforcing its cultural and tourism sectors. His efforts to support and promote cultural heritage, empower youth, and enhance sports development will contribute to Malta’s attractiveness as a premier destination and bolster its economic resilience.

The MHRA expressed that it looks forward to the positive contributions of Mr Micallef’s leadership. It said his work will not only advance cultural and sports initiatives but also foster youth engagement, supporting a vibrant and sustainable future for tourism and societal development throughout Europe.
