Robert Abela

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that two schemes designed to help businesses focus on renewables and sustainability were recently approved by his Cabinet of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries. The announcement was made at the launch of the celebrations of the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise in Malta.

The Chamber was described as an important strategic partner by Dr Abela, as their members come forward with proposals brought about by their entrepreneurial aspirations.

Speaking at the event, Dr Abela emphasised that 2023 is planned to be the year in which the legislative proposal for the right to a bank account for self-employed individuals and businesses is launched. He explained that work has already started to ensure due diligence processes remain robust and strong, “we are seeing that we have concrete results based on consultation with you and other partners.”

The organisation has been the voice of private industry since it was recognised in 1848, and has supported, and represented its member both domestically, and internationally.

Dr Abela assured that the Government will continue to provide certainty and stability, to ensure an environment which allows businesses and the labour sector to grow and strengthen. He also explained that the Government will continue to invest in digital infrastructure and education and cut bureaucracy to facilitate trade and investment. He added that, for new prosperity to be guaranteed by the Government, leaps and bounds need to be taken on the path to becoming climate neutral and digital.

The Prime Minister’s statements may appear antithetical to some, due to recent news that Malta has resumed oil exploration efforts in its territorial waters. It is yet to be seen what steps would be taken if resources are located.
