Trailer overturns causing rush hour traffic chaos in Marsa

A trailer overturned in Marsa causing heavy traffic in the area around Kavallerija Street on Thursday (today) morning.

The incident took place in one of the key roads linking Malta’s south to the busy central region, right before the Marsa-Qormi footbridge.

At 7am, Transport Malta informed motorists that due to the incident, the road in question has been temporarily closed for traffic.

In the post, the authority stated that the operation to reopen the road is expected to take around another hour.

“We encourage drivers to make use of alternative routes. Thank you for your cooperation,” it continued.

Marsa and the surrounding localities have already been suffering from increased traffic in recent weeks, with roadworks taking place on Tal-Barrani Road (Tarxien) and Mdina Road (Qormi).

Following the incident, congestion increased significantly, with standstill traffic being reported in a number of other areas, including in Gudja and Għaxaq in the roads leading to Malta International Airport, as well as in Paola and the Cottonera area.

Reports from later on Thursday morning stated that traffic heading south from Blata l-Bajda through Dicembru 13 Road has been cleared, yet the Santa Venera tunnels and the Marsa-Ħamrun bypass is still at a standstill in both directions.
